tantra mantra alive died Woman in Mandla Madhya Pradesh

Report identifies positive news on kidney disease in the US, yet challenges remain

PUBLIC RELEASE:

Report identifies positive news on kidney disease in the US, yet challenges remain

United States Renal Data System 2015 report highlights current trends in kidney disease
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN HEALTH SYSTEM
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The annual data report from the United States Renal Data System (USRDS) reveals both positive and negative trends in kidney disease in the U.S.
The report is released by the USRDS coordinating center based at the University of Michigan Kidney Epidemiology and Cost Center, in partnership with Arbor Research Collaborative for Health.
Highlights from the report include:
  • Fewer deaths were reported among dialysis and kidney transplant patients in 2013, dropping by 28 percent and 40 percent, respectively, since 1996.
  • Prevalence of end-stage kidney disease--the last stage of chronic kidney disease when the kidneys can no longer remove waste and excess water from the body, and dialysis or kidney transplantation is necessary for survival-- continued to rise. The size of the dialysis population increased 4 percent in 2013, reaching 466,607, and is now 63.2 percent larger than in 2000.
  • Home dialysis--when patients have the ability to clear excess fluid and waste from the kidneys by using a dialysis machine in the privacy of their own home--use is 52 percent higher than a decade ago.
  • The active waiting list for kidney transplants was 2.7 times larger than the supply of donor kidneys, with 17,600 kidney transplants performed in 2013.
"Overall trends for end-stage kidney disease are promising for those affected," says Rajiv Saran, M.D., professor of internal medicine at U-M Health System and director of the USRDS coordinating center. "Patients on dialysis are living longer and equally positive, survival rates have steadily improved among recipients of both living and deceased donor kidney transplants."
While the report highlights several positive trends, Saran mentions it's important to also consider areas where improvement is needed.
"Several lifestyle-related chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases can contribute to kidney disease," Saran says. "Monitoring and early treatment of those conditions are key to prevention, and can help patients keep their kidney disease under control."
With patients affected by the disease living longer, the report also highlights increasing medical costs associated with kidney disease.
Medicare spending for patients with chronic kidney disease aged 65 and older exceeded $50 billion in 2013 and represented 20 percent of all Medicare spending in that age group. In addition, the total cost to Medicare for end-stage kidney disease grew to $30.9 billion and accounted for 7.1 percent of the overall paid Medicare claims costs.
Encouragingly, use of home dialysis has increased in recent years. Home dialysis offers patients more flexibility and convenience, allowing for an improved quality of life. Home dialysis use overall in 2013 was 52 percent higher than a decade ago.
Saran mentions the data report continues to emphasize the low awareness of kidney disease in the general population, as well as the fact that rates of screening for the condition by simple urine testing remain low, even among those with risk factors for the disease.
"Awareness of this silent, but deadly killer may help prevent those with early-stage kidney disease from progressing," Saran says. "Learning more about risk factors for the disease and early diagnosis are of vital importance as symptoms of kidney disease develop much later."

Jordan’s ‘Theeb’ nominated for best foreign film Oscar

The Jordanian film “Theeb”, co-produced in the UAE, has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Should the film prove successful at the ceremony on February 28, it will become the first Arab film to receive an Oscar.
The movie, a coming-of-age drama set in the First World War-era Jordanian desert, features a cast made up largely of Bedouins with no previous acting experience.

The Jordanian film, directed by Naji Abu Nowar, will go up against Colombia’s Embrace of the Serpent, France’s Mustang, Hungary’s Son of Saul and Denmark’s A War.
Speaking to Al Arabiya News’ Raed Omari back in September, Abu Nowar said his team was “overwhelmed” by the success the film has garnered globally.
“It has been an overwhelming and joyous experience for the whole team. We are all very happy and the journey continues,” he told Al Arabiya News.
The film faced many obstacles on its way before hitting screen world-wide but as the director puts it, “Theeb” hopes recognition will push for more Arab cinema to reach international standards.
“On a practical level I hope it proves to investors and funds here that we can make international standard films – and in Theeb’s case for a lot less money than in the West – that can be celebrated across the world,” Abu Nowar said.

Experts on course to unravel secrets of Egypt pyramids

Experts revealed Sunday new findings at two of Egypt's famed pyramids, boosting efforts to unravel whether the ancient world's iconic monuments contain secret chambers.
For the past three months a team of researchers from Egypt, France, Canada and Japan have been scanning four pyramids with thermal cameras to see if they contain unknown structures or cavities.
Operation ScanPyramids began on October 25 to search for hidden rooms inside Khufu -- also known as the Great Pyramid -- and Khafre in Giza and the Bent and Red pyramids in Dahshur, all south of Cairo.
The project is expected to continue until the end of 2016, and applies a mix of infrared thermography, muon radiography imaging and 3D reconstruction -- all of which the researchers say are non-invasive and non-destructive techniques.
On Sunday, experts revealed new findings on some of the limestone blocks that make up the western flank of the Red pyramid and northern flank of Khufu.
"There is a clear separation of temperature on the west face of Red pyramid. The bottom is colder than the top," Matthieu Klein of Canada's Laval University told a news conference.
"It's interesting. We have no answers yet... Could it be because of the wind? Maybe, but it's interesting," he said, adding that the difference in temperature was of three to six degrees Celsius.
A video projection of the data recorded by the thermal cameras showed hues of red on the blocks where heat was detected and blue and magenta for the cooler ones.
Klein said two anomalies were also located on the northern flank of Khufu, where experts have previously found similar "points of interest" on the monument's eastern face.
Experts say they will carry out more investigations to include further data analysis of the anomalies detected so far.
"The primary result tells us that we have some news, some good news," Antiquities Minister Mamduh al-Damati said.
"We will have some secrets to solve in the pyramids, but it's very early to say what they are."
At 146 metres (480 feet) tall, Khufu pyramid, named after the son of pharaoh Snefru, is considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, built some 4,500 years ago.
It has three known chambers, and like other pyramids in Egypt was intended as a pharaoh's tomb.
The Red pyramid, built by Snefru, is 105 metres tall and located to the north of the Bent pyramid at the Dahshur necropolis.

Should non-Muslims wear the hijab in solidarity with American Muslims?

Since The Washington Post published an op-ed titled "As Muslim women, we actually ask you not to wear the hijab in the name of interfaith solidarity" in December 2015 by Asra Nomani and Hala Arafa, there's been an overwhelming backlash from the very women it was intending to support - Muslim women.
The widely shared seminal piece was written in an attempt by Nomani and Arafa to discourage the trend by non-Muslim women across the U.S. posting pictures of themselves in hijabs on social media, a trend recently inspired when Larycia Hawkins, a Wheaton College professor made the decision to wear the hijab as a way of showing solidarity with those suffering at the hands of Islamophobes.
Women talk as the Washington National Cathedral and five Muslim groups hold the first celebration of Muslim Friday Prayers, Jumaa, in the Cathedral's North Transept in Washington, November 14, 2014. (Reuters)
The piece, which was followed up by another supportive article in the Daily Beast "The Great Hypocritical Muslim Cover-Up" by controversial British campaigner Maajid Nawaz and chair of Quilliam Foundation. He argues for a non- hijab day on the premise that wearing the hijab hurts the freedom of some Muslim women because it is sometimes enforced by men.
These conclusions shared by Nomani and Nawaz have provoked many hijab and non-hijab wearing Muslim female thought leaders in America and the UK to express concern at the "problematic" nature of the arguments. Countless open letters, blog posts and opinion articles have been published online to counter what many Muslim women believe are "reductionist" and "unrepresentative" views.
Speaking to Al Arabiya News, Samar Kaukab, Executive Director at Arete, University of Chicago said "From a feminist perspective this dangerous obsession with what women wear - whether it is a headscarf or a bikini - is tired, and utterly non-feminist. The issue isn't what a woman does or does not wear. The main issue is in a woman's choices being imposed upon her by some cultural value that is deemed to be more right. Sadly, Asra and Maajid seem to be imposing the same limitations on women's freedoms as the ones they are protesting."

Telling women how to dress

Maajid Nawaz's intervention was further criticized since he is man who appears to be telling women how to dress. He has been accused by many respected female rights activists of 'mansplaining' and of alienating mainstream, and moderate Muslim opinion.
Amid the high level of harassment, threats and vandalism directed at American Muslims and at mosques, Muslim women were intensely debating the duty and risks related to wearing their head-coverings as usual. (AP)
"Nawaz and Nomani have a common problem: They've alienated themselves from Western Muslims by their own actions. They are unfair in their criticism, make frequent and inaccurate generalizations, and endorse (and get endorsed by) outright bigots" says prominent New York based Muslim commentator, Haroon Moghul. "How can you make a community better if no one in the community trusts you?" He added.
The publication of both these articles coincide with a period in which Muslim women in the U.S. are coming under increased harassment because of anti-Muslim bigotry. Of the many forms of harassment faced by Muslims in America today, harassment around the hijab has become central feature. With Donald Trump riding high in the polls there is a widespread feeling that Muslims in the U.S. are under an almost daily coordinated Islamophobic assault.
Writer and journalist Wajahat Ali worries about the way Maajid and Nomani have coordinated their articles: "Just look at their Twitter feed and articles. They support, promote and reinforce each other and their respective narratives,” Ali told Al Arabiya News.
“With fellow travelers such as these, you are not going to win over the hearts and minds of Muslims despite your best intentions and efforts."

Organization of Islamic Cooperation appoints four women in key posts

The 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has appointed four women as directors of departments at its Jeddah-based headquarters with the aim of bolstering the pan-Islamic group’s social role.
“We believe that Islam is the religion of prosperity, civility, peace and social justice and development. We aim through our programs to combat the defamation of Islam by supporting and empowering Muslim women,” said Muhlah Talibnah, the newly appointed director general for cultural, social and family affairs.
Talibnah from Mauritania said the goal of her directorate was to promote OIC’s role in society with the cooperation of other Islamic organizations.
She said some of the issues that require urgent attention include women empowerment, family, children, youth and elderly, and people with special needs.
Fadheelah Qareen from Algeria was appointed director general for social and family affairs. Speaking about her role, Qareen said among the goals she aims to achieve are social and family development in Islamic societies.
“We are currently setting long-term and short-term goals. We must establish a stable directorate for social and family issues in the Islamic world. That entails having a plan for quality assurance and having consistent developmental strategies,” said Qareen.
She added we must have strategies for women empowerment, childcare, youth empowerment, preservation of family values, social security for the elderly and those with special needs.
OIC’s Media Director Maha Aqeel said her role is to highlight the issues facing the Islamic world and bring attention to not only the calamities but also the successes of the Islamic world.
“Our most important issue is Jerusalem and the Palestinian cause. The organization is 47 years old and it was mainly founded to find a solution to this problem. We will also highlight issues of Islamic minorities in non-member states, Islamophobia in the West, sectarianism and the fight against terrorism and extremism,” said Aqeel, a Saudi national.
OIC’s Humanitarian Affairs Director and International Organizations and European Union Ambassador Noriyah Al-Hamami said she aims to bring about positive changes in issues such as women employment.
“Women should take on more leading positions in the Islamic world and branch out to all areas and fields of society. Hopefully, by time we will improve the image the Western world has of a Muslim woman,” said Al-Hamami, who is from Yemen.

One killed by shelling in Turkey near Syrian border

At least one person was killed and three others wounded Monday when two mortar shells, likely fired from Syria, landed near a school in the Turkish town of Kilis on the border, officials said.
The mayor of Kilis, Hasan Kara, was quoted as saying by Turkey’s NTV television that all schools in the town had been evacuated and the shelling had most likely come from Syria.
One of those wounded was in a serious condition, he added.
Television pictures showed the wounded being taken to hospital by ambulance. Windows on the ground floor of the school had been smashed by the impact of the blast while one car was severely damaged.
Reports said that the person killed was a school cleaner. The shells reportedly landed in the garden outside the school.
“It seems that the shelling came from the south,” said Kara. “The people should not allow provocations. Kilis residents should stay calm.”
Kilis, a town of just under 100,000, lies just north of the Syrian border, some 10 kilometers from the Syrian town of Azaz.
Turkish officials have said it is the only town in Turkey with a majority of Syrians, some of the estimated 2.2 million living in Turkey who have fled the civil war at home.
That area of northern Syria south of Kilis has in the last months been the scene of fierce clashes involving Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) who have seized swathes of northern Syria.
Turkey has said that it is working to push ISIS out of the border zone, which the extremist group controlled on the Syrian side for much of 2015.
A suicide bomber who the Turkish authorities say was a member of ISIS last week killed 10 German tourists in the center of Istanbul, the first time that foreigners have been targeted by such an attack in Turkey.
Turkish ground forces then pounded some 500 positions of ISIS in Syria and Iraq with artillery and tank fire over a 48-hour period, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said.
Turkey has often been criticized by its Western allies for not doing enough to combat ISIS militants.
But Ankara last year stepped up its involvement in the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS, hosting American war planes at its Incirlik air base for deadly raids against the jihadists and conducting air strikes of its own.
Turkish media reports have said Turkish jets are no longer flying over Syria after the shooting down of a Russian war plane on November 24 by one of Turkey’s jets led to an unprecedented crisis in relations between Moscow and Ankara.
Turkey has also repeatedly said it does not want Kurdish militia forces -- who are themselves bitterly opposed to ISIS -- from advancing westwards of the Euphrates River in northern Syria.
Davutoglu said last week that Turkey would carry on fighting ISIS “until it leaves the Turkish border area completely.”
